I think its a good idea that we have only one day of scheduled polo per week. Thanks for keeping this together, Stephen.

We have changed the schedule a bit. We are going to start playing at Baltimore garage on Thursdays at 5:30 PM.  We’re going to get some general flyers about KCBP out soon. And for those who live in Midtown and need rides to Holmes on Sundays, let us know we’ll get you there and back.

Friendlies. April 24th-25th. The court is not going to be reserved. The city wants insurance this time around. Stl, como, wichita, tulsa, lawrence, manhattan; all of these clubs will probably be showing up. Things we need help with concerning this event:

  • places to stay! floors, couches, beds.
  • some food for the event. bring anything to share. (we’ll need vegetarian stuff too)
  • bring friends and kc people to check it out! its a great opportunity to see a lot of really good players play polo. I want our city to represent.

Midwest Championship 8. in Minneapolis. Registration starts Friday 9th at noon. $46 per team for registration. They’re doing this thing well, it looks very legit. A Tim from como pointed out that sleeping  in a tent is probably the best way to sleep over night while there.

We need wood for the Baltimore garage to build walls. If you have any pieces or know of any scrap piles, help out!

We’re going to post some flyers, that my friend Mike designed, around town this week. Feel free to do the same! I’m really hoping for a good turnout. We need more people to start playing!

The Tweed ride bike polo demonstration is still on for April 3rd (although I have not found mention of it, or kcbp, on their website). I believe the demonstration will be towards the end of the event. I’m glad they asked us to do this; it will be a good chance to promote our club to a wider audience, plus a tweed ride sounds pretty great. Outfits such as those pictured below will be appropriate attire for polo players (and I’m sure there are other good examples).

Also, we have been asked to act as Corkers for the ride.

In sad news, Brian and Vanessa of famed Kansas City Bicycle Polo, and great contributors to the club, will be moving in a very eastward way next month. They both supported this club and helped improve it. Thanks guys! Best of luck to you both.

In other’s news, Minneapolis bike polo club has gained non-profit organization status. I believe they are the first polo club in North America to do so. I’m excited to see what they do with it. Learn more about it on their beautiful website, of which I am envious.

A good friend of mine is trying to get polo started in Nashville, TN. He witnessed the como pull-out and saw what kc polo was up to and liked what he saw. I have a good feeling about a polo scene in Nashville; they have moderate weather and a nice bike scene. Currently, they are having a difficult time finding ski poles through thrift stores, craigslist, and ebay. They have considered buying them from REI. If anyone has any solutions for Nashville’s polo problem, let me know! Thanks!

Yesterday, we got some mallets made for the expo. We also have a fresh set of polo balls with more on the way? We tuned up our bikes and our own mallets as well.

The weather has insisted on staying around 35 degrees or lower with precipitation each day before or during our polo days. [Speaking of polo days, we have set a schedule which you can find on the Times/Locations page.] It looks like the weather is starting to take a warmer trend this week and next and stay closer to 40 degrees, which is awesome. Hopefully we will get consistent playing in.

The tennis court is still working out, but we ran into our first tennis players the other day. They were cool, but I think it would be a good idea to start looking at other lit, less popular tennis courts, as kansas city has many of them. Or, we can find a lit parking lot, which is really easy to find, and just get enough boards to make a court out of. Its my favorite idea so far and I think its practical. Boards are easy to build and the ball won’t get stuck in them. When the weather gets warmer, we won’t have to worry about other athletes playing parking lot ball; it’ll be ours. The San Diego club has some pictures on their website here of what I’m talking about. Our setup wouldn’t need to be that nice, but you get the idea. Let the naysaying begin.

We haven’t played on the hockey court in months, but I hear it has some snow on it that we can easily remove. Hopefully we’ll get to play on it this Sunday.

The t-shirt and logo designs are still in progress, but we got a preview of them and they look great so far! We’re excited about that project.

A few things we’re looking forward to and getting stoked on, for those who are still interested in getting stoked on things:

  • March 6th, friendlies/tournament in COMO
  • March 27th, Kansas City Bike Polo Expo (interested kansas citians, newcomer event)
  • April 3rd, Kansas City Tweed ride with polo demo (I think thats still happening)
  • April 23-24, Kansas City Friendlies (clubs from all around!)
  • May 22-23, 8th Midwest Bike Polo Tournament in Minneapolis

When: February 20th, which is a Saturday at 1 PM.

Where: My place, which is on SW Trafficway and 39th Terr. Email me at paul@kansascitybicyclepolo.com for an exact location if you’re interested in attending.

What: The purposes of this event will be for regulars to improve or build new mallets for personal use and also to build as many mallets as we can for the KC Polo Expo, which is coming up at the end of March. Our plan is to put mallets in people’s hands as give-aways, with hopes that this will encourage interested players to return, after the expo. Mallets are essentially constructed with ski poles and hdpe gas pipe. This link will give you an idea of the process we use to build mallets.

Also, Elrod will offer his tools and wisdom to service polo bikes. If you need help building your polo bike or just help with your brake, for example, this event is an opportune time for that. We should also have corrugated plastic for those who want it.

Other news: There is rumor that we have been asked to put on a bike polo demo for Kansas City’s velocipede and tweed ride on April 3rd. You can find info about the event on facebook here. Also, FC asked me to post a request that he made. I’ll just quote his request and if you’re interested you can email him at ephsea@gmail.com

..”I found lots of (8) double
walled MTB rims on Ebay for 60$. That’s 7.50$ per double walled rim! If I
can get a few others to chip in I’ll order a stack for polo replacements.”

I found (and later saw that Vanessa had also discovered) the video below. It is a well edited montage video of 7th Midwest Champeenship highlights. It looks like Mr. Do of MPLS put this together. Its pretty great.

They will place three of the same type of beer in coolers. Those participating will grab (or pull-out) a beer from a cooler and whoever has the same beers at the end of the picking will be on the same team for the day. You can find more info and discuss here as well. It will be an awesome time and a good way to get unrusted from the winter.

Don’t forget, polo on Tuesday 01/26, 6pm at woodland court.

The good news: there is a tennis court in the city at 71 hwy and swope pkwy (to be exact its at woodland and swope). This tennis court is lit 24/7. Nobody plays tennis when the temp is under 60 degrees. The tennis court, and the road leading to the court is entirely covered in a foot or more of snow, making the court unaccessible to others.
I have made the court accessible by shoveling out a path, which starts at the road entrance of woodland going into the court parking lot.

The bad news: if we want to play this week, or in the near future, we’re going to have to get that snow off of that court! but as much as i’d love to do it myself its a daunting task however, it is definitely doable. As far as i’m concerned, finding a garage in the city or near the city is a total loss and i’m tired of wasting my time on it. We’re going to learn to play in the cold; all the clubs north of us have it worse and they’re far better than any other club we’ve seen!

More good news: if we get the court shoveled off tomorrow we’ll have a day of sunshine and warmth on wednesday that will make evening wednesday play optimal! and brian needs all the practice he can get before the big lock-in in STL this weekend! so maybe we can play on thursday too..

Conclusion: help shovel snow tomorrow! write a comment on here if you plan to do it, make it a party i don’t care. i’ll be there at 5:30 for sure if there is still more work to be done, but the more sun it can get tomorrow the better.

the tennis court is here. you’ll have to park on woodland ave and 47th terrace and walk to it. thanks guys i hope it works out, this court is a great place!
